VERDEL, Neb. (AP) - Government investigators say a plane that crashed in northeast Nebraska earlier this month lost power before the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board also says in its preliminary report on the July 18 crash that pilot Richard Nielsen was licensed only for single-engine planes, not the multiengine Beech TC-45J he was flying.

Nielsen was injured in the crash near Verdel. His passenger, Dan Johnson from Lynch, Neb., was killed.

Investigators have not determined what caused the plane to lose power.
