Melbeta Community Park

A community of just 138 residents worked all summer to make an upgrade to their town- today their efforts paid off.

Members of the community in Melbeta broke ground in May on a new park and playground, and today they celebrated the grand opening with a ribbon cutting.

Congressman Adrian Smith was on hand with a crowd of over one hundred people to hear a Senator LeRoy Louden read a proclamation from the governor.

"I Dave Heineman, Governor of the State of Nebraska hereby congratulate the community of Melbeta on the dedication of the Melbeta Community Park."

The ball got rolling on the project over five years ago when the village purchased the land.

Sixty-five thousand dollars and countless volunteer hours later, the community has achieved their goal.

The park  now has a basketball court, picnic area, and brand new playground equipment giving kids a safe place to play.

"They have been here almost every day. My kids themselves have been here everyday. And we've had family reunions here already, and there's just been a lot of gathering here already. We really are excited," said Laura Leggott.

There was also live music, plenty of food, and fun and games for kids of all ages at today's ceremony.
