Neb. school drops disputed scholarship program

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The Rising City school district is dumping a scholarship program that drew scrutiny from state officials for its use of taxpayer dollars.

Rising City school board president Dan Potter says the board decided this year to discontinue the program, saying the district had more immediate concerns to address.

Among those concerns are possible plans to consolidate with the David City school district.

The program offered scholarships of up to $5,000 to high school students for little more than attending the district's high school.

Nebraska State Auditor Mike Foley had criticized the scholarships because they were funded with state aid and property tax dollars intended to pay for textbooks, teacher salaries and other teaching costs.
