Hikers, bird watchers and nature enthusiasts will soon have more land to get out and enjoy.
More than 13,000 acres of the Wildcat Hills will open to the public beginning Saturday.
Groups such as the Platte River Basin Environments, Nebraska Game and Parks, the Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever have worked for years to get to this point and finally open the 20 square miles of rugged land.
For those involved in preparing to open the land, seeing the public and the wildlife enjoy the projects will be rewarding.
"We'll be very, very happy. This has been a long time coming and a lot of effort has gone into it and we're comfortable at the stage that we are at that these lands are ready to be opened and enjoyed," said Platte Valley Basin Environments Hod Kosman.
The new additions to the Wildcat Hills are located in Banner County, Scotts Bluff County and Morrill County.
The added lands will be free for the public to enjoy.
Those who choose to learn more about the lands can head out to the Wildcat Hills on Saturday where maps will be handed out.
