Wildcat Hills Expansion

Wildcat Hills Expansion

Posted: Updated:

There's now a new excuse to go out and enjoy nature: 13,000 acres of the Wildcat Hills is now open to the public.

Hikers, bird watchers, photographers and nature enthusiasts now have 20square miles of new land to explore.

The new areas were officially open to the public today, and plenty of people were eager to be some of the first to explore according to Hod Kosman.

"It's been tremendous excitement. People started coming a little after 8 o'clock- we thought they'd come at 9, and they were here early. It's just been a steady stream of young and old."

Groups such as the Platte River Basin Environments, Nebraska Game and Parks, the Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever have worked for years to get to this point and finally open the twenty square miles of rugged land.

"We'd open actually about 6,000 acres prior to this, so we're heading to 20,000 acres of land. By this time next year we hope to have another 2,600 acres open, and we're just gonna keep going."

The new additions to the Wildcat Hills are located in Banner County, Scotts Bluff County and Morrill County, and the added lands are free for the public to enjoy.
