HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) - A 3-year-old mare shot in the head over the weekend is expected to survive.

The horse suffered brain swelling and has lost some motor skills following Sunday's shooting near Hastings. Owners Scott and Shelley Rystrom say it's unknown what permanent damage the mare could be left with, but they're trying to stay positive.

Authorities believe the mare was shot with a .22-caliber rifle. A weapon hasn't been recovered.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested for possible involvement in the case. A 15-year-old boy was questioned and released to his parents Sunday. The 17-year-old remains in custody at a juvenile center in Lincoln.

Adams County Sheriff Gregg Magee says he is unsure what charges either teenager may face in the shooting.
