Snowy highway accidents

The arctic blast of winter weather that pummeled the panhandle over the weekend led to some difficult driving conditions this morning.

The Nebraska State Patrol responded to over a dozen accidents caused by the snowy weather over the past three days.

Possibly the worst accident happened between Morrill and Henry, where four people were sent to Regional West after a head-on collision.

Two of those people remain in serious condition today, and one is listed as in fair condition.

Troop E Captain Kyle Ott with the Nebraska State Patrol offers tips to motorists for safer driving in these conditions.

"The biggest thing i think that folks should try to remember when traveling on these types of roadways is obviously slow down. Don't use your cruise control, leave a much longer distance between you and the vehicle in front, and eliminate distractions in your vehicle."

Some of those distractions involve using your cell phone to talk or text, and the bottom line is using your seat belt, which will lessen the severity of injuries.

Captain Ott also wants motorists not to be lulled into a false sense of security because of melting snow and ice, overnight temperatures will cause the roads to freeze again overnight and become extremely slick once again.
