E.W.C. students battle housing shortage

Posted: Updated:

The city of Torrington is feeling the effects of an influx of residents moving into the area.

As the Wyoming Medium Security Corrections Institute nears completion, many of its 350 new employees are seeking housing in the area.

But real estate companies in the Torrington and Lingle areas are saying that there have been some struggles trying to fill these needs.

Due to the current economic situation, many of the new employees are seeking rentals rather than owning a home.

Students at Eastern Wyoming College are also feeling the pinch- the campus' dormatories only house 127 students, and rentals are the most ideal housing arrangements for students who commute but don't live at home.

The prison is set to open in January, but many of its employees began relocating to the Torrington area in September for training.
