BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) - Officers in Beatrice talked a man into dropping the pry bar he was brandishing, then arrested him for breaking into the sheriff's department offices.

The Gage County Sheriff's Office says a county official spotted 45-year-old Barry Vilda with the pry bar before Vilda used it to break through a front window of the building, which also houses the jail.

The break-in occurred a little after 5 p.m. Thursday.

A news release says deputies and Beatrice Police officers called to the scene confronted Vilda, who demanded that they shoot him.

They eventually talked him into dropping the pry bar, then arrested him on several charges, including making threats.

A sheriff's spokeswoman says Vilda was still in custody Friday, after appearing in court.
