Gage County, Neb., voters reject jail bond

Associated Press - November 11, 2009 7:55 AM ET

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) - More than 80 percent of Gage County voters have rejected an $11.4 million bond proposal to build a replacement jail and law enforcement center.

The unofficial results of the mail-in election were announced early Wednesday morning. A little more than 49 percent of the county's registered voters participated.

The new building would have been built on the west edge of Beatrice. It would have included 85 beds to address the overcrowding problem at the current facility, which is more than 30 years old and has only 30 beds.
