David City, Neb., recall group gives up for now

DAVID CITY, Neb. (AP) - A group that tried to recall the mayor of David City has given up - at least for now.

Members decided not to appeal a judge's ruling that tossed out four recall petitions, leaving organizers short of signatures needed to force an election.

Mayor Dana Trowbridge had challenged the validity of the petitions, alleging that some of the signatures were improperly gathered. Judge Mary Gilbride of Butler County District Court agreed.

Organizer Steve Gaston denied the allegation and last month said his group would appeal the judge's decision.

But now he says the appeal could take up to a year - a pointless exercise if Trowbridge doesn't seek re-election.

Gaston says he'll make another recall effort if Trowbridge were to run again.
