With the holiday season approaching, people tend to dig a little deeper in their pockets for charity– but some scammers in the panhandle are trying to exploit that generosity.
The Dawes County Sheriffs Department received a call from a resident informing them that they had just been asked to donate to the “Children's Wish Network”.
Unfortunately, no such charity exists, but plays off similar charities like the Make a Wish Foundation, Children's Miracle Network, and the Kids Wish Network.
“This is a scam, so because Americans as a whole are so generous, and especially around the holidays, individuals become a little more generous," says Dawes County Sheriff Karl Dailey. "Please don't throw your money away and please don't leave yourself open for further loss by giving your credit card number.”
The real charities, who help grant terminally ill children a dream wish, do not solicit donations, whether it be on the phone, internet or door to door.
Sheriff Dailey urges people who wish to donate to a charity to check out the organization on their own, and always stop and think before you give away personal information.
