Central Neb. legal self-help center to open

Associated Press - November 24, 2009 6:25 AM ET

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - State court officials will soon open a Grand Island center designed to help individuals navigate the legal system.

A legal self-help center will be open in the Hall County Courthouse on Fridays beginning Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Court officials say the new center isn't a substitute for legal representation, but it will help those who can't afford to hire an attorney.

The self-help center will have information on Nebraska law and court proceedings in family law matters, including divorce, child custody and support and visitation.

Volunteer attorneys from Hastings, Kearney and Grand Island will provide staffing for the center.

Legal self-help centers have previously opened in Lincoln and Omaha.
