Chadron residents will be seeing the lighter side of the law this coming Christmas season.
"Shop with a Cop" pairs up a police officer with children from local families that are in need.
Businesses throughout the city have large water jugs set up for donations, whether it be spare change or bills.
At the end of the collection period, the police officers pick up the kids in their cruisers and take them to a store so they can buy gifts for the holidays.
"All the shopping is done with one of the officers," says Officer Jodi Behrends, also the Resource Officer at Chadron High School. "The patrol officers really step up in this program because they don't get to work with kids on a daily basis like I do, so they really like to get involved in this."
The students are chosen by nominations from school personnel, and its not always based on financial need– some students might be having difficulties in other aspects.
The Chadron Police Officers will begin taking kids out on Friday December 18th until the 23rd.
