LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The first wintry blast of a major storm beginning to move across Nebraska glazed parts of the state with a dangerous layer of ice up to a 1/4-inch thick.
Freezing rain and sleet was beginning to turn to snow Wednesday morning.
The storm is expected to dump several inches of snow on a large swath of the state over the next couple days. Forecasters say north-central Nebraska could get about a foot of snow.
At Betty's Place restaurant in Bruning cook Randy Yaney says "ice pellets" falling from the sky were just beginning to turn to snow.
Further to the west near Red Cloud, Webster County Sheriff Troy Schmitz says conditions weren't as bad as he expected but snow was beginning to cover the ice on the roads.
