OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson declined to comment on a possible change in Nebraska Right to Life's candidate endorsement policy that would cut Democrats out. But some Democratic lawmakers in Nebraska's officially nonpartisan Legislature had plenty to say.
There are five Democratic state lawmakers who received the group's endorsement since 2006 who stand to lose that endorsement: Annette Dubas of Fullerton; Heath Mello and Jeremy Nordquist, both of Omaha; Norm Wallman of Cortland; and Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids.
Dubas, who is up for re-election this year, says the endorsement is vital to candidates in her strongly anti-abortion district. She also says a change would be unfair to Democrats like herself who have strong anti-abortion records.
Nordquist, who could seek re-election in 2012, says the group would lose credibility with such a change, making it "a branch of the Republican Party."
