Scottsbluff Council takes no action on settlement

Posted: Updated:

A settlement between a KOTA Territory City Council and a now-defunct airline has been delayed for the time being.

The Scottsbluff City Council went into executive session Monday evening in hopes of striking a deal with "Westward Airways."

The city had been paying the airline a monthly fee for continued flight service out of Scottsbluff.

But the airline went belly-up in 2005, and owes the City of Scottsbluff 80-thousand dollars in defunct loans.

Ever since then, the city has been in negotiations to try and recoup that money.

On Monday, the council looked at a settlement offer from the company, in hopes to avoid the dispute from going to court.

"And it is my recommendation to the council that we not go to a trial, explains City Manager Rick Kuckkahn. "A trial is going to cost us in the end probably more in legal fees than what is owed to us- even if we had some confidence that we'd recover it."

Unfortunately, two council members were not present last night, and the council refrained from taking action until all were able to discuss the settlement offer.

Westward Airways used to offer a daily flight to Lincoln, a service that is no longer available out of Western Nebraska Regional Airport. It also offered flights to New Mexico on a regular basis.
