Camp Guernsey trains troops with modern simulations

Posted: Updated:

It may be tough to picture a combat zone in Eastern Wyoming but one military base is using modern technology to train their troops.

Troops at Camp Guernsey don't need to travel far to experience the frontline.

The rural military base is home to the largest state of the art simulation center in Wyoming.

Sim center specialist Art Lowther says troops from across the country use the center to prepare for military operations.

"On our good days, good months we have anywhere from 15 to 250 troops coming through at any given time," Lowther said.

Public Affairs Specialist 1st Lieutenant Christian Venhuizen says the sim center serves as a critical component for military training.

"It's unbelievable as to what it actually does for a solider confidence and for his leader's confidence in both his soldier's and himself," Venhuizen said.

At the center soldiers are able to drive through the virtual streets of Baghdad and practice target shooting in a state of the art gun range.

"When we have a simulation where we can go and practice our marksmanship skills all the better," Venhuizen said.

The base may be far from troops overseas but simulations centers like the one at Camp Guernsey mold heroes in our homeland.
