Local high school student finalist for scholarship award

Posted: Updated:

A local high school student gets a nice surprise after scoring big on his PSAT.

Scottsbluff High School Senior Giles Hovseth was recently selected as a finalist in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The program recognizes nationally distinguished students through the PSAT qualifying test.

Finalists are selected from a pool of over 1.5 million juniors from over 22 thousand high schools.

Hovseth says his family was excited to hear he was a merit finalist.

"I told my mom and she was like 'oh my gosh that's incredible' and then she called my dad right away and he was at work and he yelled on the phone 'congratulations' they are pretty excited," Hovseth said.

Winners of the merit scholarships will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July.
