Local lawmaker pushing for stricter alcohol rules

Posted: Updated:

A Kota Territory lawmaker continues to push for stricter rules on alcohol in certain areas of Nebraska.

Ellsworth Senator, Leroy Louden is proposing a bill that will allow local municipalities to regulate the amount of booze sold and store hours at alcohol retailers.

Louden says the bill will allow local governments to fight public drunkenness, but several lawmakers are questioning whether the bill unfairly targets certain areas.

Lawmakers say the bill is aimed at parts of Omaha and Whiteclay, a Panhandle town that sold nearly 5 million cans of beer in 2010.

Critics of the bill question whether the proposed regulations will actually help with the alcohol problem in the long run.
