Beet growers wrap up record season

Posted: Updated:

The 2011 sugar beet crop campaign is coming to a close but not without setting some records.

Beet producers at the annual Non-stock Growers Association say beet slicing should be wrapping up in Torrington on Saturday and here in Scottsbluff by Monday.

They say this year crops produced 8,337 pounds of sugar per acre, which is a new record for the state of Nebraska.

And the cooperative produced a 24.7 ton crop this year.

Grower payment checks are being mailed out this afternoon and sugar beet growers will receive a record payment amount per ton.

Agriculture Manager at Western Sugar says, "We've had a real successful crop harvested. We did announce today that we'll have a grower payment of around $83 per ton based on the 17 sugar and that would be a record payment for the cooperative."

Western sugar cooperative is also keeping up with the "Made in America" trend by adding a "Made in America ... Made by American Farmers" label to all the GW brands.
