US senator seeks to remove 'earmark' from senate bill

Posted: Updated:

A US Senator from Nebraska says money earmarked for certain projects will hurt the country's ability to reduce spending.

Senator Mike Johann's is seeking to remove an earmark found in the senate's more than 100 billion dollar highway bill.

Johann's says a section in the bill takes unspent funds from a project in Nevada and gives it back to the state instead of helping reduce the national deficit.

"If it was so easy to evade the senate rules, every state would be earmarking money for their state and not identifying a specific project," Johann's said. "The rules specifically say that sending money to a specific state is earmarking."

Johann's says he hopes President Barack Obama follows through on his promise to veto any legislation containing earmarks.
