A local bakery is gearing up for Mardi Gras by whipping up special themed treats.
Bakers at the Gering Bakery say king cakes and the celebration of Mardi Gras are growing in popularity in the Panhandle.
The bakery receives more and more orders for the desserts every year and so far have filled about a dozen orders.
More king cakes will be sold at the bakery and the co-op tomorrow for the festivities.
Baker Jen Ahlers says people who want to have king cakes with the traditional plastic "baby" inside need to place a special order.
Ahlers says, "We've noticed that Mardi Gras has become something. Nobody here used to ever worry about Mardi Gras. Just another day on the calendar but people are starting to recognize it more and more every year."
The bakery also has Mardi Gras themed cupcakes and cookies.
Today is your last chance to place an order for a king cake, if you want it ready for tomorrow.
