Police say people in the Scottsbluff should be extra vigilant as counterfeit money begins to appear at businesses around town.
Scottsbluff Police Lieutenant Lance Kite says the department is investigating several cases of counterfeit one - hundred dollar bills that surfaced last week.
Officers have recovered three fake bills from the Gas-A-Mat" gas station, Target, and Jimmy Johns.
Lieutenant Kite says that there's one trend that is consistent in all of these counterfeits.
"The investigation has reveled that the notes are waxy to the touch. They feel like they're covered with a layer of wax, so please be aware of that."
Lieutenant kite says businesses should use a black light or a counterfeit pen to verify larger bills are legitimate.
If you suspect you received a counterfeit bill, Kite says you should get a description of who tendered it, and call police immediately.
