Gering City Council leans toward repealing hotel tax

Posted: Updated:

The city of Gering is leaning toward repealing a hotel tax the council approved in April.

Gering city council member voted 5-2 last night to continue to put the hotel tax on hold.

The tax is set to go into effect July first.

Council members say they didn't get the support from Scottsbluff and Terrytown they were counting on.

And that implementing the tax now would put Gering businesses at a disadvantage.

The money from the hotel tax would be used to help raise funds for a multi-million dollar sports complex and other recreational improvements.

The council will discuss whether to repeal the tax at the end of the month.
