Hostage is freed from Alliance pharmacy

Posted: Updated:

More than 8 hours after being taken hostage; Thiele Pharmacy owner Charles Lierk is out of the building.

It is reported that Lierk is being treated at Box Butte General Hospital after being shot in the back and forearm, but that information has not been confirmed.

There is no word yet whether the shooter is still involved in the standoff.

Authorities confirm that homicide occurred in an Alliance home, before the gunman took a Lierk hostage and shot and wounded at least two officers Tuesday.

The standoff began at Thiele Pharmacy & Gifts began around 8:50 a.m. Tuesday.

An officer with the Alliance Police Department was shot in an arm and was taken to Box Butte General Hospital.

Shortly thereafter, a Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team began moving into position in the 300 block of Box Butte Avenue.

During that stage of the standoff, a member with the SWAT team was shot by the gunman.

Several blocks in every direction of the downtown business district has been blocked off.

The name of the officers have not been released.

Officers were also on scene at 472 Cody Avenue, which is being treated as a crime scene. It is reported that a man was shot and killed inside the home.

No details have been released on that incident, and it is unknown if the two incidents are related.

A news conference has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m., according to Annora Bentley with the City of Alliance.
