Nelson proposes measure that would end grazing fees

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Senator Ben Nelson introduces a measure that will end federal grazing subsidies.

Nelson has proposed an amendment to the farm bill that would increase the fees ranchers pay to graze livestock on federal land.

The measure proposes that federal grazing and private grazing fees be comparable.

Nelson says this change would save the tax payers $120 million dollars. "Ending the bargain basement prices for this tiny group of elite ranchers is common sense, set towards getting our fiscal house in order."

Nelson says it costs $144 million dollars to manage federal grazing lands and the government only gets roughly $21 million in grazing fees.
