Congressman Smith Works to Rein In EPA

Posted: Updated:

Congressman Adrian Smith hopes a new bill could stop aerial surveillance of agricultural operations.

Smith announced he is co-sponsoring a measure to stop Environmental Protection Agency flyovers.

The EPA currently conducts aerial surveillance of confined animal feeding operations in Nebraska and other regional states.

The EPA argues that the flyovers are a cost effective way to monitor feedlots that may be polluting water.

Smith says while clean water is important the EPA needs specific cause before doing the flyovers.

"It's in all of our best interests to maintain high quality water standards but I don't see that it is necessary for the EPA to have these flights father these photographs and so forth."

The EPA has conducted nine separate flights in Nebraska since 2010.
