Farmer's take a day off to golf

Fields across the panhandle were left unattended today, as hundreds of farmers flock to the golf course for an annual tradition.

Monument Shadows hosted the annual "Farmers Day Off" golf day in Gering.

Organizers say that farmers are some of the hardest working Americans, and this day is just for them.

Committee co-chairman Dennis Stricker says early August is the perfect time for most farmers to come out, because right now most are just irrigating.

"So they get their water set in the morning, and they've got some free time where they can schedule a little time out. We love to feed them lunch, make sure they have a good time out during the day."

Upwards to 200 golfers hit the links today, and an estimated 500 were in attendance for lunch.

Area farmers say with this summers drought, any excuse to get their mind off the farm- even if it's just for a day- is much appreciated.

"We don't get a chance to get away from the farm too much," explains Kendall Bush of Mitchell, "So anytime we can get out to meet friends, eat, and have a little bit of fun, it's enjoyable."

"So yeah, I'm looking forward to it," adds Tyler Shifflet, "And I hope to have some fun."

Organizers say that "Farmers Day Off" has been a tradition for at least the past 40 years.
