The United Way of Western Nebraska is hoping they can return to a popular tradition for one of their biggest fundraiser's.
The annual "Rubber Duck Dash" is traditionally held on the bank of the North Platte River in Scottsbluff. From there, thousands of rubber ducks are dropped in and race to the finish line.
But for the past two years, high river levels have forced organizers to go to Plan B. In both 2010 and 2011, the ducks were dumped into a giant pile, and winning ducks were selected by hand.
This year, river levels are *much* lower, and Executive Director Steph Black is hopeful the ducks will get their chance to race this September.
"First of all need to make sure there's enough water in the river and make sure its safe for all of our volunteers to be in the water and in the river," explains Black. "You know with it being compromised last year with the amount of water, we need to make sure volunteers would be safe."
The final decision on whether or not the race will be held on the water or on land won't be made until a few days before the September 15th race.
