Johanns listens to drought concerns in Harrisburg

Posted: Updated:

As one of the nation's worst drought's continues, U.S. Senator Mike Johanns meets with farmers and ranchers to talk about current conditions and needs.

Farmers and ranchers in Banner County flocked to the courthouse Tuesday morning to talk about how the ongoing drought is affecting their livelihood.

During round-table discussions, ag producers expressed genuine fears about the long term affect of this drought.

"It's bad now," explains Elaine Pile, "But if this continues, what might this be next year or the year after? How could this affect food supplies- that kind of thing?"

Others say Johanns' colleagues on Capital Hill need to take action on the Farm Bill before it expires later this year.

"I would like to see that the Farm Bill continues," says Gerry Darnell. "With the safety net that we have under the crop."

Johanns says he is disheartened the Senate took its August recess without extending much - needed fiscally responsible disaster relief for ag producers across the country.
