A man, his mules and a mission

Posted: Updated:

Covered wagons used to be a fixture in the West with their owners in search of gold, land or other treasures.

We caught up with a man, and his covered wagon... Who's on a different kind of mission.

A covered wagon pulled by Belgian draft mules is sure to turn heads and that is exactly what Randy Boehmer wants. "I'm just traveling the United States in a covered wagon telling people about God."

Boehmer's journey started in Bedford, Indiana in 2008 after the loss of both his parents and his wife of 5 years.

He decided he wanted a slower paced life that meant something.

Randy says"I went to Bible school for almost 2 years and thought wow this is really cool all this stuff that's in the Bible so I thought I've got to take off and do this."

Boehmer traveled through 20 states so far with his fully-equipped covered wagon bearing the phrase "Jesus Saves". He says his wagon spreads his message.

"I don't really have to do a whole lot of preaching because it says right on the side of these wagons "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved in thy house."

Boehmer says it's a hard life sometimes but he and his team live well off what the Lord provides them. "Well there's 8 of us...5 mules, a dog, Jesus and me."

Boehmer says he has no specific destination in mind but plans to travel in his wagon for the rest of his days.

Randy Boehmer spent more than a year crafting his 2 covered wagon out of old farm wagons.

He also learned how to shoe and take care of his 5 mules ... Frank, Jesse, Dick, Jack and Butch.
