Experts predicting average bean harvest for 2012

Posted: Updated:

Bean experts are projecting an average year, at best, for this years dry-bean crop.

Farmers scouting fields in the past few weeks are predicting less than average yields due to the heat stress on the beans.

Although some beans' quality will be good, the seed size is less than average.

Staff with Trinidad Benham in Bayard say beans under pivot will be harvested earlier ... while dry land and drip irrigated beans won't be ready for at least another month.

"You probably won't see very many until the 2nd week in September," explains Area Operations Manager Dale Eirich. "Lots of beans are going to need all of September to mature, so we've got some early beans and some very late beans out there."

Experts say pinto beans will fare the best compared to other varieties planted this season.
