The Gering City Council will make a final push to buy an old school building it plans to tear down.
McKinley School has been unused for many years, and has become a bit of an eyesore for the neighborhood.
The city of Gering is hoping to buy the building and start a housing development on the lot in the next few years.
But the city and the property owner aren't seeing eye - to - eye on the price.
Gering has offered 75 - thousand, while the seller is asking 150 -thousand dollars for the property.
Mayor Ed Mayo says that it will cost at least 300 -thousand dollars for demolition and asbestos removal before any upgrades can be made. "It has fallen into a state of entropy and the neighbors have been wanting it cleaned up and cleared out, and that's the only reason the city has expressed any kind of interest in the facility is to try and clean it up for the neighborhood."
Mayo says if the seller won't lower the price, the project won't be feasible for the city.
