NSP urges safety for Labor Day Weekend

Posted: Updated:

Traffic volume on Nebraska highways are expected to increase significantly this holiday weekend... And the Nebraska State Patrol is stressing safety for all motorists.

There will be increased trooper presence on the highways, thanks to a grant to participate in the nationwide "You drink- You drive- You lose" campaign.

There will also be DUI checkpoints set up across the state this weekend.

Troop "E" Sergeant James Brady says that if all drivers follow posted speed limits and use safe driving habits, it should be a safe labor day weekend for everyone.

"For the last major holiday for the summer- there's going to be a lot of people out going to the lake, and traveling and taking the highways. We just ask they be awfully careful of their speed and any distractions and keep their seatbelt on... We just want to keep everyone safe."

There have already been 13 fatalities in Troop E this year, which covers all of Nebraska's panhandle.
