Fires nearing containment, price tag grows

Posted: Updated:

Several Nebraska Panhandle fires are nearing containment but the price tag for fighting the flames continues to grow.

Nebraska Emergency Management officials estimate the cost of the series of wildfires to be upwards of $3.2 million dollars.

The Douthit and West Ash fires are expected to cost more than $2 million alone.

Fire fighters say the Douthit fire is 99 %  contained and they are making progress on the West Ash, which is currently 55% contained.

Fire fighter spokesman Bill Knight says firefighters are moping up the remnants of the $700,000 Wellnitz fire that scorched more than 120 square miles in Nebraska and South Dakota.

NEMA officials say the federal government will cover firefighting costs on federal land.

And the state will reimburse the local departments for their services on state land and private property.
