Local democrats say outlook good after 1st day of National Convention

Posted: Updated:

A former democratic candidate for governor says so far, he's pleased with this years Democratic National Convention.

Scottsbluff lawyer Mike Meister says First Lady Michelle Obama "knocked it out of the park" as last night's keynote speaker in Charlotte.

In a personal and emotional speech, Obama described her husband's character and compassion, while the president and their daughters watched from the White House.

"Barack and I were both raised by families who didn't have much in the way of money or material possessions but who had given us something far more valuable - their unconditional love."

Meister says Michelle Obama has an edge over Ann Romney because she spoke honestly and from the heart.

"I think that's the biggest difference," explains Meister, "Is she's been a first lady; she's been out there doing a lot of things. I think Ann Romney is a wonderful person. Ann is obviously not the polished speaker that Michelle is, but Michelle's got a lot more practice at it. She let people know her husband is a decent man and he's a good man."

Tonight, the parade of democratic stars continues with former president Bill Clinton at the mic.
