Crews in Northern Nebraska begin the process of cleaning up after several fires scorched thousands of acres of rugged Panhandle terrain.
Nebraska Emergency Management Agency workers are assessing the charred acreage to see if the state qualifies for more federal disaster assistance.
NEMA confirms that only 6 structures were lost in the fire near Chadron.
Incident commander, Terry McShane says he is surprised there weren't more homes lost. "I'll tell you straight up that to only lose a half dozen primary structures in an 88,000 acre fire...is unheard of, exceptionally rare to only lose that many buildings the majority of the credit goes to the local volunteers."
McShane says crews are working to extinguish any hot spots and they plan on staying to help rehab the disaster zone in any way they can.
