The largest projected sugar beet harvest in Nebraska history is now underway.
With very few hail storms and an ideal growing season, ag producers are expecting a bumper crop of sugar beets at Western Sugar Coop this year.
Trucks have started to roll into both the Scottsbluff and Torrington facilities, and will continue harvesting for the next few months.
Senior Agriculturist Terry Butcher says all signs are pointing to excellent yields and sugar content.
"We started early harvest yesterday and the plan right now is to run extended/ longer early harvest period. That's why we started early as to try and get as much as this year's harvest ahead of time as we can."
The sugar factory will continue to process this year's harvest and its estimated 31 ton crop until mid-fall.
