With only 10 years of capacity left at the Gering landfill, Gering City Council members are putting the wheels in motion for a new landfill site.
Gering City Council members have approved an agreement for a 6 year option to purchase more than 460 acres of land from the Weinhold family East of Gering.
Gering Mayor, Ed Mayo says the city will use the land as the site for a new landfill.
Mayo says the next step in the process is to conduct an environmental study to see if the site is suitable. "This will be the first solid waste landfill, new solid waste landfill cited in the state of Nebraska since the law has changed and it's going to be interesting because we will be the first to look at the ndq rules."
Mayo says it's going to take some time before the city can move forward with its plans because environmental studies can take up to 8 years to complete.
