Fundraising slow for Scottsbluff pigeon problem

Posted: Updated:

Scottsbluff merchants are slowly pecking away at the five - thousand dollars they need to raise to help get rid of pigeons that roost downtown.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture can bring an expert out to trap and bait the pigeons; but that costs five - thousand dollars.

Eleven area businesses have contributed $2,800 dollars in the past year.

Thousands of dollars have been spent on revitalizing downtown with new signage and awnings ... But some argue the birds hurt more than the beautification process.

"We've heard from outlying businesses that have quite an impact on the pigeons. So it's important that we control this population because the droppings are a health concern."

Karen Anderson says donations from the public can be accepted and will help bring the USDA ranger out here sooner. Checks need to be made out to "Scotts Bluff County Health Department", and can be dropped off at the Health Department or the Scottsbluff/ Gering Chamber of Commerce
