Rubber duck hunt

Posted: Updated:

Duck hunting season is starting early in Scottsbluff.

20,000 yellow ducks float down the North Platte River, for the annual Rubber Duck Dash.

Volunteers held nets at the finish line to catch the ducks for next year's race, but the current was too strong and broke the nets.

The race hasn't taken place at North Platte River for two years because of strong currents.

Organizers say they proved it could be done this year, but not without some escapee rubber ducks.

"I mean after having such a good year this year selling 20,000 ducks and probably having a record. The high amount of money we raised for the community, it'd really be unfortunate if we had to then turn around and spend some of that back replacing ducks we lost."

More than 2,000 ducks were lost this year. United Way says if you find any stray rubber ducks bring them to their office on Broadway St.
