Grand Jury finds no wrongdoing in Crawford death

Posted: Updated:

A grand jury has found no wrongdoing on the part of officers who had chased a Minatare man who later stopped his car and committed suicide.

Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug  says the case involved 40-year-old Chad Sorensen. He'd led authorities on a pursuit the night of June 26-27 after making menacing remarks to two deputies in Crawford. Sorensen reportedly brandished a firearm.

The deputies chased Sorensen south of Crawford on Highway 2/71 until his car stopped. The Nebraska State Patrol says the deputies approached the car about 3 a.m. and found that Sorensen had shot himself.

State law requires a grand jury be convened whenever anyone dies while being apprehended or is in custody. The proceedings and the records are sealed, but the results are made public.
