Wide variety of state requirements for older drivers: where does Nebraska rank?

Posted: Updated:

There are more older drivers on the road today than ever before. But a new poll conducted by the Associated Press says laws vary greatly from state to state on what senior drivers need to do to stay behind the wheel.

Thirty states have some sort of senior age requirements for driver's licenses. They range from more vision testing to more frequent license renewals.

The ages when those laws take effect are literally all over the map. In Maryland, eye exams are required at every renewal at age 40. In Texas, drivers have to renew their license every two years starting when they are 85.

Nebraska's Director of Motor Vehicles says at age 72 drivers must renew in person, but examiners look for driving impairments in *all* drivers.

"We like to look at the whole gamut of drivers and look if there are any medical issues that might be a problem," explains Beverly Neth. "Whether they might be cognitive to function or physical impairments that might affect their driving. So on a daily basis our examining staff is looking at every driver on a case by case basis."

In Wyoming, drivers licenses are renewed every four years, but there are no special provisions for older drivers.
