Sen. Harms pushes for increased measures for early childhood development

Posted: Updated:

A Nebraska state senator says work needs to be done now to improve early childhood development.

Scottsbluff Senator John Harms says 60,000 of 150,000 Nebraska children don't have the basic skills to function in kindergarten.

The senator says this can't continue to happen, because as children progress through the school system they will fall further and further behind.

Senator harms says that 59 percent of kids in Scotts Bluff County are at risk. He says if nothing is done, that percentage will only get higher.

"You're going to have more uneducated, more unskilled workers. And the tragedy about this is, not only for the child, but we're now evaluating our teachers on how the children score on the test. You know what? it's not their fault. They can't make that difference up."

The senator says more early childhood development programs are needed across this state to begin reducing these staggering statistics.
