The farm bill expired but farmers shouldn't panic yet

Posted: Updated:

Some farmers and ranchers aren't panicking yet although the current farm bill has expired.

Most of the key programs in the farm bill won't expire until the end of the year or the end of the crop season even though the federal fiscal year ended yesterday.

University of Lincoln experts say its unlikely lawmakers will allow the law to expire because programs such as, support for dairies, would revert to the 1949 law.

And those provisions would be quite costly.

Many in the Ag industry expect Congress to pass some kind of farm bill during the lame-duck session after the elections.
