Gering students join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day.
Since 1997 International Walk to School Day has celebrated health and safety.
The special day is held the first Wednesday in October.
580 Northfield Elementary Students walked to school with parents, teachers and even the – Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team.
Phys-ed Teacher Jennifer Shwartz says today also highlights school safety.
"We think it's important to participate in walk to school day because it lets us address some of the safety issues that we have around our school. It helps us identify where we have some concerns so we can improve those areas."
Shwartz says the students look forward to event every year.
