Nebraska's Governor says he plans to vote against a raise for state lawmakers come November.
Governor Dave Heineman say's he's still reeling after the legislature overrode his veto to provide prenatal care for all Nebraska women, including illegal immigrants.
"We're going to give tax payer funded benefits to illegal's, and legal Nebraska citizens are likely to get a tax increase. To me, that's misguided and misplaced."
Nebraska Senators currently make 12,000 dollars annually, but voters can approve a 10,500 dollar salary increase this November.
Senator John Harms of Scottsbluff says the raise is important because it will entice more middle class candidates to run for a legislative seat.
Harms says many of the bills that pass affect the middle class directly, and they need direct representation.
"Most of the legislation that we possess in many cases has a major impact to them. I think the only way you're ever going to able to attract them to the legislature and be a part of this is to have a better salary."
Heineman maintains he will oppose the salary increase as a matter of principal until lawmakers repeal the bill.
