Local musician looks to teach his craft to the next generation

Posted: Updated:

A local musician looks to share his talent with the next generation.

Gering native Vern White opened a music studio this week to give piano lessons to kids.

White began learning the piano at age five and continued playing throughout college. He went on a  thirteen year hiatus while he worked on the railroad, but quit several years ago to become a career musician.

Earlier this year, White decided he wanted to teach piano to the next generation, and says this is his way to give back to the community he grew up in.  "If I can get one or two students to be able to go down the road in the future and rely on their music and be able to pay their bills and take care of themselves then it's worth it… it's worth it."

White already has 28 students signed up for lessons at his studio at 965 "O" Street in Gering, and hopes to inspire other young musicians to follow their dreams. "Because that's what this is all about- is making music fun for them, and making it fun to learn."

White is at his studio Monday through Thursday, but will continue to perform live shows across the region on the weekends.
