Planting winter wheat crops is risky business, especially during this dry season.
According to the US Drought Registry, 89% of Nebraska is in extreme or exception drought.
This number comes at a bad time for area farmers looking to plant wheat to last through winter.
Farmers who plant now might not get enough rain and those who wait face the imminent winter.
"Well I wouldn't wait any further to plant wheat because they will not get enough warm temperatures to grow where the plant will be optimum to withstand the cold winter."
Crops Breeding Specialists say the optimum stage to survive the winter is a two to three leaf level.
